Terroir
The grapes for this Chardonnay are sourced from meticulously selected parcels in Burgundy, where the soil is rich in limestone and clay. The philosophy of Kuheiji is entirely centered around respecting the natural cycle, applying Japanese precision to French soil. The vineyards are managed with the utmost care, ensuring every vine receives the attention needed to capture the pure, mineral essence of the land.
Producer
There is a fascinating story behind Domaine Kuheiji. Kuheiji Kono, a legendary Sake brewer from Japan, became captivated by how French winemakers express their 'terroir.' He decided not to just import wine, but to cross the ocean to Burgundy and start his own estate. The result is a unique cross-pollination: the patient, almost meditative approach of the Sake world combined with the centuries-old traditions of the Côte d'Or.
Wine
The Bourgogne Chardonnay 2022 is a paragon of elegance and clarity. Do not expect a heavy, oak-driven wine, but rather a glass that 'sings' with freshness. You will discover aromas of white flowers, ripe lemon, and a subtle hint of flint. On the palate, it is silky yet vibrant, with a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and that typical Burgundian minerality. It is a wine that is both understated and surprisingly powerful.
Vintage
The 2022 vintage in Burgundy is remembered as a year of balance. After several challenging years with frost, 2022 offered a warm summer that produced perfectly ripe grapes, while cooler nights preserved the essential freshness and acidity. This makes the wine wonderfully accessible now, while providing the structure to age for a few more years.
Pairing
This Chardonnay is a fantastic companion for refined dishes. Think of a classic Sole Meunière, grilled scallops, or a creamy risotto with chanterelles. Due to the winemaker's Japanese roots, it also pairs surprisingly well with fatty fish sashimi or dishes featuring a light dashi broth.
Serving
Serve the wine between 10 and 12°C. Give it a few minutes in a large glass; you will notice the wine slowly opening up, revealing more layers of its floral and mineral character.
