Terroir

The village of Pommard is famous for producing some of the most powerful and structured red wines in the Côte de Beaune. Domaine Kuheiji’s plots benefit from a classic Burgundian mosaic of soils, primarily clay and limestone that give the wine its deep, muscular backbone. By focusing on low yields and respecting the natural rhythm of the land, the estate captures the rugged yet refined essence of this prestigious appellation.

Producer

Domaine Kuheiji is the visionary project of Kuheiji Kono, a 15th-generation Sake master who brought his philosophy of craftsmanship from Japan to the heart of Burgundy. His approach is defined by an obsession with raw materials and a "hands-off" winemaking style that allows the vineyard to speak for itself. In the cellar, Japanese precision meets French tradition, resulting in wines that are pure, intentional, and deeply connected to their origins.

Wine

This Pommard 2022 is a true expression of Pinot Noir’s darker, more intense side. It reveals a complex bouquet of black cherries, plums, and wild berries, interwoven with subtle notes of spice and earth. While Pommard is known for its strength, Kuheiji’s touch ensures the wine remains elegant; the tannins are firm but velvety, leading to a long, sophisticated finish. It is a wine of great character that reflects both the force of the terroir and the finesse of the maker.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was a dream year for Burgundy. Despite a hot and dry summer, the grapes reached perfect maturity, resulting in wines that are concentrated, supple, and juicy. Surprisingly, even with this richness, the 2022 Pinot Noirs maintain a beautiful fresh energy and an elegant, silky texture, making them incredibly rewarding even in their youth.

Pairing

A wine with this much presence demands equally flavorful food. It is a classic partner for red meats, such as a ribeye steak with porcini mushrooms, or slow-cooked game like wild boar. For a more adventurous pairing that honors the producer's roots, try it with seared duck breast seasoned with a touch of Japanese five-spice or a rich, umami-driven mushroom risotto.

Serving

Serve at approximately 16 to 18°C. Because of its natural concentration and structure, we highly recommend decanting this Pommard for at least 45 to 60 minutes. This allows the dark fruit to open up and the tannins to soften, ensuring every layer of this complex wine is fully revealed.
