Terroir
This Riserva is born in the heart of the Maremma, Tuscany’s rugged and sun-drenched coastal region. The vineyards of Fattoria le Pupille sit on hilly terrains characterized by sandstone and clay, enriched with volcanic minerals. This unique soil, combined with the cooling breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea, allows the Sangiovese (known locally as Morellino) to develop a distinctive Mediterranean character, riper and more exuberant than its cousins in the north, yet grounded by a savory, stony minerality.
Producer
Fattoria le Pupille is the crowning achievement of Elisabetta Geppetti, often called the "Lady of Morellino." In the 1980s, she single-handedly put Scansano on the world wine map, transforming her family’s estate into a beacon of quality. Elisabetta’s vision was to prove that the Maremma could produce wines of profound elegance and longevity. Today, the estate remains family-run, embodying a blend of traditional Tuscan soul and a modern, pioneering spirit that prioritizes the health of the land above all else.
Wine
The Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2019 is a deep, soulful expression of Sangiovese, enriched by a small touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. It greets you with an intense bouquet of Marasca cherries, forest floor, and Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme. On the palate, the wine is generous and warm, with silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps it fresh. Aging in large oak barrels has added subtle notes of leather and sweet spice, leading to a long, harmonious finish that feels both powerful and graceful.
Vintage
The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as a classic for Tuscany. A balanced growing season with plenty of spring rain and a warm, steady summer allowed for a slow and perfect ripening of the grapes. In the Maremma, this translated into wines with exceptional structural balance, boasting both the ripeness of a sunny year and the aromatic complexity of a cooler one. The 2019 Riserva is drinking beautifully now but has the depth to evolve for another decade.
Pairing
This wine is a natural match for the hearty flavors of the Tuscan coast. It pairs beautifully with Pici cinghiale (wild boar pasta), grilled lamb chops with herbs, or a rich porcini mushroom risotto. For a simpler delight, enjoy it with aged Pecorino Toscano or a platter of artisanal charcuterie.
Serving
Serve at approximately 16 to 18°C. To let its Mediterranean aromas fully blossom, we recommend pouring it into a large glass about 20 minutes before enjoying.
